MDT Administrator — Deployment Engineer (OS Imaging & Task Sequences)

MDT Administrator — Deployment Engineer (OS Imaging & Task Sequences)

Role summary

Oversees and executes operating system deployment and device provisioning using Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT). Builds and maintains task sequences, images, drivers, and deployment shares to deliver consistent, automated Windows installations.

Key responsibilities

  • Image creation: Build, capture, and maintain Windows reference images (sysprep, offline servicing, updates).
  • Task sequences: Design, test, and optimize MDT task sequences for standard and specialized deployments.
  • Driver & package management: Import, organize, and apply drivers, language packs, updates, and applications into deployment shares.
  • Automation & scripting: Develop PowerShell and task-sequence scripts to automate configuration, post-installation tasks, and error handling.
  • Integration: Integrate MDT with WDS, SCCM/ConfigMgr, AD, and PXE boot environments as needed.
  • Troubleshooting: Diagnose deployment failures, driver issues, and task-sequence errors; implement fixes and rollbacks.
  • Documentation & training: Create runbooks, deployment guides, and train IT staff on imaging processes.
  • Change & release management: Manage image/version control, testing cycles, and phased rollouts to minimize user impact.

Required skills & technologies

  • MDT: Advanced experience with MDT (deployment shares, rules, task sequences).
  • Windows imaging: Sysprep, DISM, capture and apply image workflows.
  • Scripting: PowerShell (strong), batch/WSH familiarity.
  • Networking & PXE: WDS, PXE boot, DHCP, TFTP basics.
  • Configuration management: Familiarity with SCCM/ConfigMgr or Intune for hybrid environments.
  • Active Directory & GPOs: Join, OU placement, and Group Policy application during deployment.
  • Drivers & packaging: Driver injection strategies, offline servicing, application packaging.
  • Troubleshooting tools: Logs analysis (BDD.log, SMSTS.log), DISM, Event Viewer.

Typical deliverables

  • Standardized gold images for each Windows version.
  • Reusable, documented MDT task sequences for common roles (laptop, desktop, kiosk).
  • Automated scripts for post-deployment configuration and software installs.
  • Deployment runbooks and rollback procedures.
  • Driver libraries and update processes.

Success metrics

  • Deployment success rate (%) and mean time to deploy.
  • Reduction in manual post-imaging steps.
  • Time to provision a new device.
  • Rate of deployment-related incidents after rollout.

Career progression

Can progress to Endpoint Engineering Lead, Systems Architect, or Configuration Manager roles focusing on broader automation (SCCM/Intune) and cloud-based provisioning.
